Research Interest
Modeling the thermomechanical behaviors of materials under complex conditions, such as laser heating, phase change, thermofluid flow, elasto-plastic deformation and residual stresses; modeling the interaction between elastic waves and acoustic metamaterial structures with finite element method (FEM); modeling the thermomechanical performance of oscillating heat pipes with FEM.

Metallic Additive Manufacturing: studied the multi-physical processes in metallic additive manufacturing, including laser/electron beam absorption, heat conduction into the metal powder bed, convection and radiative heat transfer into the inert gas phase, phase change of metal powders, Marangoni convection in the melt pool, balling effect due to Plateau-Rayleigh instability and the dynamic motion of metal powders. Methods of interest in the research include traditional FEM or finite volume method, as well as novel approaches such as volume of fluid method (VOF), level-set method, lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and discrete element method.

Non-diffusive Heat Conduction: developed ballistic-diffusive heat conduction models for nanoscale heat transfer to explain experimental data from time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR), frequency-domain thermoreflectance (FDTR) and transient thermal grating (TTG).

Acoustic Metamaterial Design: designed the metamaterial structures for elastic wave absorption and vibration suppression ; modeled dynamic performance of the structures by implementing finite-element simulations in Matlab; fabricated the designed structures by integrating plates/beams with isolated vibration absorbers; tested the fabricated metamaterial sample with a scanning laser vibrometer.

Multiphysic Simulation of Oscillating Heat Pipes (OHPs): developed a multiphysics model for an OHP by coupling latent heat transfer of the vapor phase, convective heat transfer of the liquid phase, and mechanical motion of the liquid slugs; demonstrated the fundamental working mechanism of OHPs by modal analysis of the liquid-vapor slug system; predicted the primary oscillation frequency with Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT); calculated the potential heat transfer capability of the OHP.

Material Point Method (MPM): MPM is a particle-based meshfree numerical method which is useful for large material deformation simulation. A bar structure subject to extension force was modeled with 2D MPM. Both the normal and shear stress wave propagations were captured.

Pressure Vessel Design: designed a pressure vessel made of multidirectional laminates; conducted stress/strain and failure analysis for the vessel subject to internal pressure loads and thermal residual stresses.

CFD Modeling of Airfoils: established a fluid dynamics model for the air around two adjacent airfoils; applied an upwind scheme to compute the momentum and energy field in the computational domain.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Packaging Equipment Design: designed and tested an electrical control system including a host super controller, five slave controllers, two stepper motors, twelve servo motors and a temperature control unit.
